Concert Reviews: Wednesday 29 April 2015

On Wednesday 29 April 2015 the LPO presented a suitably all-Rachmaninoff programme for the concluding concert in the season-long Inside Out: Rachmaninoff series. It featured two generations of Jurowskis - Vladimir Jurowski jr conducted ten Rachmaninoff songs arranged by his grandfather, Vladimir Jurowski sr; the soloist was the Russian tenor Vsevolod Grivnov. The other works were orchestral arrangements by Yuri Butsko of four movements from Piano Suites and Symphony No. 3.

'Deep pain and sadness expressed through intense creative discipline aren’t qualities noted often enough in the music of Sergey Rachmaninov. Yet they’ve been consistently underlined, with rigour to match, in Vladimir Jurowski’s season-long 'Inside Out' festival with his London Philharmonic Orchestra playing at a consistent white heat ... Rachmaninov as one of the 20th century's truly great and serious composers?  Unquestionably.' - David Nice, The Arts Desk, 30 April 2015

'[Jurowski’s] reading of [Rachmaninoff’s] Third Symphony was most remarkable for its discipline, the brief lament for horn, clarinet and cello so audaciously quiet and finely blended that you had to hold your breath. ...

'A beautifully supported silky tone spread across the violas and violins fromt he cellos... There was muscle from the brass and percussion, but it was the elasticity of the whole orchestra that impressed.'
- Anna Picard, The Times, 1 May 2015 4-stars

'The central movement [of the Third Symphony] with its beautiful Adagio surrounding a scherzo-like passage [had] wonderful woodwind playing in dialogue with rich balanced string tone.

'We were treated to the most affecting performance of the evening, an arrangement by the conductor's grandfather (also Vladimir Jurowski) of ten songs, sung by tenor Vsevolod Grivnov. The orchestral garb certainly brought out the directness and apparent simplicity of the songs without the distraction of Rachmaninov’s arresting piano style.' - Chris Garlick, Bachtrack, 30 April 2015

'The Rachmaninoff Inside Out series from the LPO has often been very good indeed. [...]

'Jurowski grand-père displayed a mastery of instrumental colour and sensitivity to the music he was orchestrating [...] The palm has to be awarded to the very fine tenor Vsevolod Grivnov, who was outstanding throughout.

'Many parts of the succeeding movements were well-played.' - Robert Matthew-Walker, Classical Source, 30 April 2015

'The orchestra made a winning case for [Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony]'
