On Wednesday 19 March 2014 at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall, the London Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor David Zinman and piano soloist Emanuel Ax performed a programme of Mozart, Strauss and Bach.
Here are the press reviews ...
'The LPO was in superb form both corporately – responsive, lustrous and resplendent – and in many fine solo contributions.'
Colin Anderson, Classical Source, 20 March 2014
'Emanuel Ax was the soloist, weighty yet gracefully flamboyant in a performance that was less abrasive than some: the piece is playful rather than barbed, and the eventual dissolution of its humour into the dreamy waltz with which it closes was exquisitely done.' (4 stars)
Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 20 March 2014
'The Brahmsian filigree in the solo part merrily trickled off Ax's fingers; orchestra and pianist fused together, garrulous, energetic, friends for life.' (4 stars)
Geoff Brown, The Times, 20 March 2014 (online access for subscribers only)
'Two great performers in two very different styles, and an orchestra in cracking form, made this concert something special' (4 stars)
Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph, 20 March 2014
The concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and is available to listen again free of charge for 7 days via BBC iPlayer.
