Concert reviews: 8 December 2018

The culmination of Changing Faces: Stravinsky's Journey, London Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Vladimir Jurowski) & Choir joined with The Swingles & friends to perform Berio's Sinfonia alongside works by Stravinsky, in a concert dedicated to the memory of Maxim Mikhailov.

‘Antiphonally placed choral members again worked wonders of meticulousness, blend and linguistic familiarity; so too the soloists, also placed behind the orchestra without compromising communication’ Colin Anderson, Classical Source, 8 December 2018

★★★★☆ ‘Jurowski was keenly alert to the brief moments of orchestral numinousness that suggest the immanence of divine illumination amid the darkness. This was a performance of great profundity and spiritual depth.’ Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 9 December 2018

‘There were occasional signs of the (slightly) tentative to the London Philharmonic’s performance of the Aldous Huxley Variations under Vladimir Jurowski: perhaps no surprise, given infrequence of performance. There was nothing to disrupt, though: anyone listening.’ Mark Berry, Boulezian, 9 December 2018

★★★★★‘Jurowski took the work to a higher plane. The Swingles sing almost continuously throughout, and here brought their trademark bravado and sass. But Jurowski matched them, with sleek, dynamic strings, and efficient, incisive brass.’ Gavin Dixon, The Arts Desk, 10 December 2018

‘Presiding over all was the commanding figure of Vladimir Jurowski, who unerringly steered his forces through the 35-minute work and conveyed the highly emotional quality of the Biblical verses to great effect.’ Alan Sanders, Seen and Heard International, 10 December 2018

★★★☆☆'Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia — a hectic collage of quotations from Mahler, Ravel and Beethoven among others. It’s a piece that can baffle and disorientate, but in this enthusiastic performance from the orchestra and The Swingles, it provided some much-needed vitality.' Hannah Nepil, Financial Times, 12 December 2018

★★★★☆'I expected precise, pungent orchestral playing, but the accuracy of the London Philharmonic Choir was exemplary' Richard Morrison, The Times, 10 December 2018

Of all the singer jump-ins I've been involved with, @samfurnesstenor's heroics with Stravinsky's fiendishly difficult 'Threni' tops them all. He got the music on Thursday morning + delivered a powerful (+note perfect) performance on Saturday with @LPOrchestra + #Jurowski BRAVO! Tim Murray, @TimMurray5, Twitter, 10 December 2018

Wonderful late #Stravinsky to end @LPOrchestra's year long journey, especially @LPChoir. Heart-felt tribute to the fine orchestra & choir from #VladimirJurowski was v touching and Berio's Sinfonia w @swinglesingers was just incredible. PremierClassical, @PremierClassica, Twitter, 8 December 2018
