Concert Reviews: 3 October 2015

On Saturday 3 October, London Philharmonic Orchestra was once again joined by their Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Vladimir Jurowski, as well as violinist Leonidas Kavakos, for a performance of Knussen, Sibelius, and Scriabin’s Third Symphony: The Divine Poem.

Read the reviews here:

‘Leonidas Kavakos and Jurowski seemed as one in Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, enough togetherness to suggest that, in the first two movements, the unusually broad approach was of mutual consideration'.

‘Under Vladmir Jurowski’s scrupulous conducting, and through the London Philharmonic’s warmth and sensitivity, Knussen’s exquisite scoring of these capricious epigrams ravished the senses and fed the imagination’.

‘the performance was superb, played magnificently and conducted with sympathy and surety’.

Colin Anderson, Classical Source, 3 October 2015

‘[Jurowski] is an expert in wielding large-scale Romantic scores that revel in the intimate as much as the grandiose’.

‘Needless to say, Jurowski proved to be their master and every detail of expression was made to count’.

Matthew Rye, Bachtrack, 4 October 2015 (4 stars)

’The LPO presented a rich array of orchestral colours and textures with portentous brass brilliantly conveying the fateful presence of the divine while the strings and woodwind suggested the angst and striving of man struggling with the old religious certainties’.

’Kavakos must have played this concerto countless times but there was nothing stale about this performance and he seemed alive to every phrase and nuance of the score’.

‘Jurowski navigated the way to each of the movement’s climaxes brilliantly and coaxed engulfing waves of sound from the LPO’.

‘This was an outstanding concert from start to finish’.

Robert Beattie, Seen and Heard International, 5 October 2015
