Concert reviews: 29 September 2018

On Saturday 29 September LPO Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski led a performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 27 with Dame Mitsuko Uchida, and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with Stuart Skelton and Dame Sarah Connolly. Read the reviews below:

★★★★☆ ‘[Das Lied von der Erde] is a work of multitudes ... Jurowski revealed all these emotions and more, a sorcerer working magic as he balanced Mahler’s myriad colours and tiny rubatos ... as Connolly sang the final dying words of acceptance, it truly felt as if we had touched on something transcendent, profound, sublime.’ Rebecca Franks, The Times, 2 October 2018

‘Uchida was completely inside the music. Added magic came from the orchestra ... Special mention to the oboe (Ian Hardwick) and bassoon (the wonderfully reedy Jonathan Davies); and, it was only in retrospect that one noticed Jurowski’s near-telepathic responses ... A terrific performance from all, unforgettable in many respects.’ Colin Clarke, seenandheard-international.com, 1 October 2018

‘Vladimir Jurowski has a close connection with the LPO, minimal gestures equal great results. This was a Mahler performance where the power came from a certain restraint as well as immaculate cohesion and concentration ... Connolly brought authority and security to ‘Der Abschied’ (The Farewell) ... The LPO breathed with the singer rather than played and produced sounds of spiritual persuasion.’ Guy Holloway, classicalsource.com, 30 September 2018
