Concert reviews: 29 November 2017

On Wednesday 29 November 2017 we were joined by Julia Fischer for a performance of Respighi's Autumn Poem, Chausson's Poème, and the UK premiere of Joseph Marx's An Autumn Symphony, led by LPO Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski. Read the reviews here:

★★★★☆ ‘The LPO under Vladimir Jurowski last night performed an extraordinary hour-long Autumn Symphony not heard anywhere for 80 years ... all credit to Jurowski for exhuming this forgotten score and delivering it with such élan' Barry Millington, Evening Standard, 30 November 2017

★★★★☆ ‘Ten years of Vladimir Jurowski in London have brought a non-stop journey of discovery. As the London Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates his decade as music director, it can look back on a period of unrivalled adventure, taking audiences to places other orchestras never reach.’ Richard Fairman, Financial Times, 30 November 2017

★★★★★ ‘Joseph Marx’s Eine Herbstsymphonie – a spectacular 1922 work finally receiving its UK première – hit the spot, a lavish autumnal wallow, cloaked in Klimtian gold and crimson in an opulent reading under Vladimir Jurowski’ Mark Pullinger,, 30 November 2017

★★★☆☆ ‘Jurowski's fearlessness here was refreshing ... The Respighi rarity deserves more outings if it can be championed like this ... Jurowski and the LPO brought a diaphonous sheen to Marx's bountiful layers’ Neil Fisher, The Times, 1 December 2017

★★★☆☆ ‘Vladimir Jurowski has long been admired for the adventurousness of his programming and his willingness to explore areas of the repertory from which other conductors have shied away ... you could fault neither Jurowski’s commitment nor the grandeur of the LPO’s playing.’ Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 30 November 2017

'Vladimir Jurowski presided over [An Autumn Symphony's] extravagance with imperturbable control and the LPO played with irresistible panache' Peter Reed,, 30 November 2017
