Concert Reviews: 28 January 2017

On Wednesday 25 January 2017, the LPO's Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski led the Orchestra in a performance of Jean-Féry Rebel's Les élémens, Milhaud's La Création du monde, and John Adams's Harmonielehre.

‘Through these second and third concerts of the [Belief and Beyond Belief] series ... as is the way with Jurowski, the programming was innovative and rewarding ... these richly varied evenings were involving and refreshing as well as extremely well played. Jurowski’s desire to get off the well-beaten track of repertoire is admirable, as is the thoughtfulness that goes into his programming, and the quality of the execution by the LPO. As Jurowski prepares to mark 10 years with the LPO next season, the understanding between them seems in great shape.’
Martin Kettle, The Guardian, 29 January 2017

‘The LPO was at full strength for John Adams’s Harmonielehre ... The LPO’s stunning brass section added a convulsive percussiveness to Adams’s pounding rhythms in the first movement.’
Peter Reed, classicalsource, 29 January 2017

'Jurowski and the LPO, keyed up to a high level of concentration, delivered [Harmonielehre] with the shattering force of the Big Bang.'
Richard Fairman, Financial Times, 31 January 2017 (paywall)
