Concert Reviews: 26 September 2015

On Saturday 26 September, the London Philharmonic Orchestra returned to Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, for their second performance of the 15/16 season. The concert featured Taneyev’s St John of Damascus, Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini, and Sibelius’s Second Symphony.

‘Jurowski coaxed a sound of reverent sweetness from the LPO winds, and the long passage where changing harmonies unfurled over a long bass note seemed to glow with an inner light. Time appeared to stand still’.

’Jurowski does implacable doom very well, and I’ve rarely heard the storm that begins Tchaikovsky’s piece seem so relentless and unstoppable’.

‘the programme had that satisfying combination of variety and interconnection one always hopes for, but very rarely gets’.

Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph, 27 September 2015 (4 Stars)

‘Jurowski seems a natural adherent to this style and he was wholeheartedly supported by the LPO’.

‘At this concert Jurowski skipped the National Romanticism of Sibelius’s First in favour of a most astonishingly refreshing view of the Second Symphony...The effect was as if we were hearing passages for the first time’.

Edward Clark, Classical Source, 26 September 2015

‘Here, Jurowski produced one of those utterly compelling performances where the London Philharmonic Orchestra seemed to be playing as if their lives depended on it'.

‘Pulling back for the final bars before launching into the big tune of the finale worked well in a movement where Jurowski produced some magnificent climaxes. His balancing of the orchestra was illuminating, and in the way he brought out the many ostinato figures I felt as if I was encountering the music for the first time. I for one will now be listening to Sibelius with fresh ears’.

David Truslove, Bachtrack, 27 September 2015 (4 Stars)
