★★★★☆ ‘A superb achievement ... Jurowski mined Enescu’s textures for all they were worth. The playing was exemplary as darkening strings and growling brass tracked Oedipe’s descent into psychological and physical darkness, and luminous woodwind marked his eventual emergence into light and spiritual understanding.’ Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 24 September 2017

★★★★★ ‘Jurowski drew out every remarkable sonority in the score ... the LPO musicians really surpassed themselves in playing of élan, subtlety and virtuosity.’ Matthew Rye,, 24 September 2017

★★★★☆ ‘The singing shone and the orchestra played with fire and lustre ... Vladimir Jurowski, in his element with blockbuster repertoire from 20th-century Europe, conducted with customary panache. Enescu’s delicate webs of sound shimmered; sinewy melodic lines wriggled about; gigantic climaxes swallowed up the hall.’ Geoff Brown, The Times, 26 September 2017 [paywall]

★★★★☆ ‘When done with the expertise and commitment displayed in this concert performance by the London Philharmonic under its principal conductor Vladimir Jurowski, plus two Romanian choirs, Oedipe comes over with sufficient vision and integrity to qualify as a masterpiece’ George Hall, Financial Times, 25 September 2017

★★★★☆ ‘All praise to Vladimir Jurowski and the LPO for presenting this extraordinary work’ Barry Millington, Evening Standard, 24 September 2017

★★★★☆ ‘Total understanding and mastery of a unique style – or styles – that only Vladimir Jurowski could achieve with his musical partner of a decade’s standing, the London Philharmonic Orchestra ... the LPO never ceased to project extreme beauty and extreme violence. It’s the highest compliment to all that one came out thinking not so much “what a magnificent performance” as “what a great masterpiece”.’ David Nice,, 25 September 2017

★★★★★ ‘Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) were on terrific form ... This was a performance which gripped from the outset’ Robert Hugill,, 24 September 2017

★★★★☆ ‘George Enescu’s opera has a bewildering impact ... brusque bass clarinets and contrabassoons, wheedling saxophone and a lustrous oil-slick of strings' Alexandra Coglan, The Independent, 25 September 2017

‘It was a wonderful performance from the London Philharmonic, with Jurowski concentrating on detail and colour to begin with, before cranking up the drama and ushering in the transfiguration at the end of the work.’ Jim Pritchard,, 25 September 2017

‘Everything about this opus sounded authoritative ... Vladimir Jurowski drew out marvellous sonorities from the woodwinds ... the LPO released the best of this ancient myth and its subtly modern interpretation.’ Peter Reed,, 24 September 2017
