Featuring Kian Soltani, Edward Gardner's whirlwind of a concert on 23 March was truly an event of drastic contrast - from the opening strains of Elgar's Cello Concerto to the earth-shattering finale of Mahler's First Symphony.
‘Mahler described the start of the Finale as a “horrible outcry”, representing the despair of his hero, and that startling moment [was] found the LPO in commanding form, not least the brass.’ Richard Landau, Classical Source, 23 March 2019
‘An impressively dynamic account, but suitably weighty, and never lacking drama or atmosphere.’ Gavin Dixon, The Arts Desk, 25 March 2019
‘This was a performance of character and clarity’ John Allison, The Telegraph, 25 March 2019★★★★☆ ‘In Edward Gardner’s performance, the pragmatism, sensitivity and ability to shape a long musical argument required of an opera conductor were keenly felt.’ Anna Picard, The Times, 26 March 2019
