Concert reviews: 21 November 2018

On Wednesday 21 November, Opera Rara Artistic Director Sir Mark Elder conducted a delightful programme of Bizet, Verdi and the first production Puccini's one act Le Villi in 120 years.

★★★★★ ‘[The London Philharmonic Orchestra brought] infectiously sprung rhythmic zest to the rustic dances of the first scene and especially the interludes that link the two parts of the action.’ Alexander Campbell, Classical Source, 22 November 2018

★★★☆☆ ‘London Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera Rara presented a programme of early stage works by all three composers, offering an evening of high drama despite the concert format.’ Kevin W NG, Bachtrack, 22 November 2018

★★★★☆ ‘Conducted by the evening’s maestro Mark Elder, who seemed to be enjoying himself. He was not the only one.’ Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph, 22 November 2018

★★★★☆  ‘Anyone would award this student essay [by Puccini] an A for effort, ambition and promise; the eloquence of its melodies seems more like a gift from god.’ Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph (Print), 23 November 2018

★★★★☆ ‘Wonderfully atmospheric ... an exhilarating sense that any minute it was going to fall apart’ Ruth Hansford, Planet Hugill, 23 November 2018

★★★★☆  ‘It’s a slight enough story, economically told and performed here with unswerving commitment by conductor Mark Elder, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera Rara Chorus.’ Nick Kimberley, Evening Standard, 22 November 2018

'The encouraging gestures of Sir Mark Elder brought out the colours in Bizet’s evocation of rustic Provence, as well as the charm and drama where necessary in music that predates Carmen.’ Jim Pritchard, Seen and Heard International, 22 November 2018

‘Congratulations to all of the team @OperaRara and @LPOrchestra especially Sir Mark Elder, Henry Little, the brilliant @ErmonelaJaho, Brian Mulligan & Arsen Soghomonyan and a FANTASTIC chorus for #LeVllli @southbankcentre last night. Great to catch up with the fab @Muchilland too.’ James Clutton, @JamesOHP, 22 November 2018

‘@OperaRara and @ErmonelaJaho Wow, just..wow.  What a little gem you’ve all unearthed this evening in Puccini’s #LeVilli.  Orchestra was sumptuous and gorgeous voices all three.  I’m just sorry it isn’t longer, so thank you for the extras at the end!’ Rachel Criddle, @rachel_criddle, 21 November 2018
