Concert Reviews: 20 April 2016

On Wednesday 20 April, LPO Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski led the Orchestra in a performance of French masterpieces, including Saint-Saëns’s exotic Piano Concerto No. 5 and Debussy’s Images.

Read the reviews here:

‘Smooth and sonorous brass playing gave way to languid, shimmering warmth when the whole orchestra was gathered up’.
‘Jurowski drew diaphanous playing from the LPO and shaped the whole work with wonderful fluidity’.
John Allison, The Telegraph, 21 April 2016 (4 stars)

‘The centrepiece, and the evening’s high point, was Saint-Saëns’s Fifth Piano Concerto... The finale, expressing “the joy of a sea crossing” according to Saint-Saëns, was all elation and dexterous wit’.
‘Debussy’s Images had plenty of poise, languor and fire, the translucent textures of Ibéria nicely judged’.
Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 22 April 2016 (4 stars)

‘There was plenty to admire in [Jurowski’s] cool control and the sharp colours of the playing, lusciousness and sensuality’.
Neil Fisher, The Times, 22 April 2016 (subscription only)

‘Jurowski drew out the music’s futurist tendencies, its play with rhythm, momentum and pulse, and the LPO’s performance conveyed an overall mechanical powerhouse of orchestral energy’.
‘In their consummately prepared performance, Jurowski and the orchestra made every detail tell’.
Matthew Rye, Bachtrack, 21 April 2016 (4 stars)

‘This was a particularly appealing, Michelin-starred collection of works that found the gourmets of the London Philharmonic Orchestra responding to their chef with enthusiasm and expertise’.
Colin Anderson, Classical Source, 21 April 2016

‘Vladimir Jurowski and the London Philharmonic Orchestra showed us that it’s the journey which music makes into the heart and mind which really counts’.
Claire Seymour, Seen and Heard International 24 April 2016
