Concert reviews: 2 October 2019

Tackling Elgar's epic Violin Concerto and Richard Strauss's expansive depiction of the Alps, Jurowski took the audience of the Royal Festival Hall on an emotional journey into Strauss's Alpine storm.

★★★★☆ ‘This care for impact but not at the expense of good tone was a feature of the LPO’s work throughout.’

‘The golden Sunset was spacious, its climax radiant, the Epilogue given with “gentle ecstasy" as marked. “Cinema music” scoffed a critic in 1915. Perhaps, but for a great movie, one with a brilliant director in Vladimir Jurowski.’ Roy Westbrook, 3 October 2019, Bachtrack

‘The LPO was on tip-top form’ Brian Barford, 2 October 2019, Classical Source

‘a performance which, while richly sumptuous when required, was most especially noteworthy for Jurowski’s discerning revelation of the inner workings of Strauss’s score.’

‘The LPO musicians positively relished the raging wind and downpour, and as night fell, Jurowski sustained the focus and firmness of the orchestral sound. Though the sun waned, the epiphany was undiminished.’

‘Jurowski and the LPO have been at the peak for a long time.’ Claire Seymour, 3 October 2019, Seen and Heard
