Concert reviews: 11 December 2019

For our final Royal Festival Hall performance of 2019, Vladimir Jurowski, Peter Donohoe and the Orchestra shook the hall with the power and emotion of Foulds and Shostakovich.

★★★★☆ ‘Jurowski kept the orchestra sparkling’
‘this performance dedicated to the memory of Mariss Jansons, formerly the LPO’s principal guest conductor, was always going to be one to treasure – beautifully and most tautly played, steerd by Jurowski with unflinching precision through revellion, sorrow, anger and nightmare.’ Geoff Brown, 13 December 2019, The Times

★★★★☆ ‘Jurowski and the LPO brought Foulds’s highly colourful orchestral writing vividly to life’
‘There are few conductors around to match Jurowski in Shostakovich’s symphonies.’ Richard Fairman, 13 December 2019, Financial Times

★★★★☆ ‘Of this I have no doubt: Jurowski, the LPO and Shostakovich make up an awe-inspiring combination.’ Alexander Hall, 12 December 2019, Bachtrack

‘this performance was extraordinary – valedictory, tender, and intensely committed’ 13 December 2019, Classical Iconoclast
