Reviews
‘Recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall, Ravi Shankar’s symphony, devised with the LPO’s conductor David Murphy, explores Indian classical themes in a western setting. Shankar’s daughter Anoushka, no stranger to fusion experiments of this sort, takes off into intricate, utterly assured sitar solos. The sprightly raga-cum-hornpipe of the first movement gives way to slow flute and sitar, a dancing scherzo and a tumultuous finale.’
David Honigmann, Financial Times, 21 May 2012
‘With a rich recording of this live concert this is more than just the souvenir of a remarkable music event. The performance is terrific, and Anoushka Shankar’s playing alone makes it worth the asking price.’
Dominy Clements, MusicWeb International
‘A resounding triumph, from the vibrant, animated opening movement Kafi Zila through an elegant, involving lento section of duetting flute and sitar, and an intriguing Indian scherzo whose hypnotic layerings of marimba, flute and sitar evoke echoes of American minimalism, through to the stirring, virtuoso finale.’ *****
Andy Gill, The Independent, 30 April 2012
