CD: Dvořák – Symphony No. 8

LPO conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras

Dvořák Symphonic Variations
Dvořák Symphony No. 8

Sir Charles Mackerras conductor
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Sir Charles Mackerras (1925–2010) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra shared a musical heritage spanning 45 years. Mackerras's debut performance with the Orchestra in 1958 began with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, and in 2003 he made what would be his final appearance with the Orchestra conducting Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7. This live recording of Dvořák’s Symphonic Variations and Symphony No. 8 from 1992 pays tribute to a partnership that exuded a joy and vivacity in music-making that lives on in the memory of the Orchestra and its audience, and can now be discovered and cherished anew.

‘This live 1992 recording from Festival Hall shows Mackerras at the height of his powers. It is a joy from beginning to end ... None knew better than Mackerras how to pace and colour this magical work, and the orchestra responds magnificently.’
David Cairns, The Sunday Times, 31 July 2011

'Probably the best Mackerras version of [the Symphonic Variations] that we have.'
Gramophone Magazine, September 2011

‘It’s hard to top Charles Mackerras and the LPO for sheer atmosphere, grand scope and unwavering pace.’
Brian Reinhart, MusicWeb International, 21 September 2011

‘The LPO is inspired, one of those concert performances in which everything comes off with a certainty and confidence that is in itself noteworthy and which here also gets to the very core of Dvořák’s music.’
Colin Anderson, Classicalsource.com
