CD: Tchaikovsky & Lalo violin works

LPO conducted by Vasily Petrenko & Omer Meir Wellber

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
Lalo Symphonie espagnole, for violin and orchestra, Op. 21

Augustin Hadelich violin
Vasily Petrenko conductor (Tchaikovsky)
Omer Meir Wellber conductor (Lalo)
London Philharmonic Orchestra

Musical beauty is strikingly present in these two pieces written for violin and orchestra. Fascinatingly, Tchaikovsky was inspired to compose his Violin Concerto after he heard Josef Kotek play Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole; we hear the influence of Lalo’s fresh and unassumingly simple approach in Tchaikovsky’s Concerto.

From Lalo’s fiesta-like finale to the lyrical grace and virtuosic brilliance heard in Tchaikovsky’s Concerto, violinist Augustin Hadelich is ideally suited. Vasily Petrenko and Omer Meir Wellber conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra in this pair of live concert recordings.

Reviews

‘Arresting, heartfelt Tchaikovsky ... a seductive, graceful performance [of Symphonie Espagnole]’
BBC Music Magazine, May 2017 [four stars]

‘Lalo ... bursts with character. There is plenty of beef here, both in the violin tone and in the LPO’s partnering, Omer Meir Wellber drawing out Spanish fire and stamping heels from this colourful – and strangely neglected – score. Hadelich exudes bravado in the terrific Rondo finale’
Gramophone, March 2017

‘A very fine account of the Tchaikovsky concerto ... the timing of the last movement, on the back of the CD case, is listed as 11 minutes – which may seem excessive – but that is due to nearly a minute of justly deserved applause ... one of the finest accounts’
