CD: Bruckner – Symphony No. 5

LPO conducted by Stanisław Skrowaczewski

Anton Bruckner (1824–96)
Symphony No. 5 in B flat major (Nowak Edition, 1878)

Stanisław Skrowaczewski conductor
London Philharmonic Orchestra

Pieter Schoeman leader

Anton Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony is one of the grandest of his so-called 'cathedrals in sound'. From the first movement’s monumental tone, via the dance-haunted Scherzo, to the beautiful yet finally enigmatic Adagio, Bruckner’s 'fantastic' Fifth ends with a triumphant orchestral finale, among the finest ever written. This recording is an interpretation of humility from nonagenarian Stanisław Skrowaczewski, a performance in which the listener can hear the remarkable connection between conductor and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Reviews

‘The playing of the orchestra is first-class throughout, with mellifluous strings and wonderfully phrased and blended brass. Also impressive is Skrowaczewski’s grip on the work’s architecture, tempi for each section chosen in the context of the needs of the immediate material as well as the longer-term unity of the work.’
Gramophone, August 2016

‘The assured Skrowaczewski demonstrates a deep understanding and resolute control of the symphonic structure. The unified playing is of the highest calibre, perceptive and with gripping intensity. The London brass sound full, making dark threatening roars, the woodwind is highly assured and the strings have a splendid silvery timbre.’
