London Philharmonic Orchestra
David Alberman leader (Symphony No. 1)
Pieter Schoeman leader (Symphony No. 6)
The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s celebrated Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski conducts live recordings of Tchaikovsky’s first and last symphonies. The first, entitled ‘Winter Daydreams’, is seductively atmospheric with crisp orchestrations giving the impression of a winter landscape. The Sixth Symphony, ‘Pathétique’, is a passionate work whose tragic finale gained significance with Tchaikovsky’s sudden death just days after he conducted its first performance in St Petersburg.

‘These performances demonstrate the strides the London Philharmonic has made under the inspired direction of its young, Russian-born Principal Conductor ... the playing is so good that it rivals some of the great studio recordings … the performance is rounded off with a heartbreakingly poignant adagio lamentoso. Unmissable’. *****
Hugh Canning, The Sunday Times, 23 August 2009

‘Both are exceptional performances, superbly recorded with a breathtaking range of dynamics. Taking pride of place is the wonderfully bright, buoyant account of the First Symphony, the so-called "Winter Daydreams". But that's only because outstanding recordings of that work are rarer than those of the Pathétique, in which Jurowski never allows the pathos to tip over into self-pity. In both works, the playing of the LPO is world class.' *****
Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 4 September 2009

‘The Symphony No. 1 is among the best available in a propulsive performance suggesting that Jurowski views it as a genuine symphony, not a disguised ballet.’
David Patrick Stearns, Philadelphia Inquirer, 2 November 2009

‘All told, this disc further enhances Jurowski’s standing as a formidable Tchaikovskian.’
David Breckbill, BBC Music Magazine, November 2009

‘A tremendous disc, superbly recorded – all the frisson of live performances but none of the technical disadvantages.’
Edward Seckerson, The Arts Desk

‘Jurowski steers a marvellously lithe and clear-sighted course through this youthful canvas [Symphony No. 1], with springy bass-lines, luminous textures and bracing contrapuntal vigour the keynotes (the antiphonally divided first and second fiddles are a boon, as is the LPO’s personable woodwind roster). There’s genuine affection, too, nowhere more evident than in the third movement’s radiant Trio melody which is allowed to blossom fully yet with no unwanted loss of momentum.’
