Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921–2006) was one of the most fascinating characters to have emerged from the creative core of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, leaving his post as the ensemble's Principal Trumpet in 1953 as his career as a composer began its ascendency. Arnold's remarkable and varied output is seasoned with scores dedicated to the Orchestra and its players; this collection conducted by the composer's champion Vernon Handley offers a glance at Arnold the cinematic artist, Arnold the jocular humorist and Arnold the profound symphonist.

'The recording team has wrought marvels in making the Festival Hall sound warmer and more immediate than it is, enabling the full range and richness of the LPO’s playing to come across. Handley reveals his skill in the way he makes even unfamiliar music sing the first time you hear it, and yet he is not afraid of playing to Arnold’s rhythmic robustness when required.’
Matthew Rye, Daily Telegraph, 30 September 2006

‘These live performances are very committed, and Handley’s skill in sustaining atmosphere and holding elusive structures together is heard at its finest. Excellently balanced sound, too.’
Ivan March, Gramophone Magazine, November 2006
