Eduard van Beinum followed in the footsteps of Sir Thomas Beecham in 1949, becoming only the second musician to hold the Principal Conductorship of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This disc – extending a limited catalogue of issued van Beinum recordings – demonstrates something of the conductor's eclecticism, enthusiasm for British music and ability to draw from his mid-century London Philharmonic Orchestra performances of the highest quality.

‘The immediacy of the performances is electrifying. You’ll search hard to find a fresher approach to Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, or the precision Beinum gets from Beethoven’s Leonore No. 1 and Brahms’s Haydn Variations.’
Kenneth Walton, The Scotsman, 16 January 2006

‘The Elgar has never been bettered, not even by Boult ... There’s real excitement generated here.’
