British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, one of the most acclaimed and widely-performed composers of his generation, was Composer in Residence of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 2005–10. His works skilfully blend classical and jazz idioms, modernism and tradition. These four performances were admired and enjoyed by critics, audiences and musicians and have an electrifying quality which is captured on these live recordings – not only premiere recordings, but in two cases live recordings of world premieres.

Scherzoid commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, Lorin Maazel, Music Director, with generous support from the Francis Goelet Fund, and by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with generous support from the Southbank Centre, in collaboration with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
Evening Songs commissioned by NDR.
When I Woke commissioned as part of the 2001 Credit Suisse International Concert Series.
Yet Another Set To commissioned by Casa da Música, Porto 2001. The London Philharmonic Orchestra is very grateful to Casa da Música for granting permission to present the world première performance and recording.

‘The four orchestral works in the LPO disc are full of the driven, dancing rhythms, the garishly brilliant or darkly sensuous instrumental colours, the floating, improvisatory melodic lines, the brittle humour and nervous melancholy that instantly shouts (or whispers) ‘Turnage’. Trombonist Christian Lindberg is his usual vibrant and virtuosic self in Yet Another Set To, and this disc is also well worth having for the exciting, Beethoven-inspired Scherzoid, and especially the song cycle When I Woke, in a moving, tonally seductive performance by Gerald Finley.’
Stephen Johnson, BBC Music Magazine, December 2005

‘Conductors Jonathan Nott, Vladimir Jurowski and Marin Alsop, all sound at one with Turnage’s mixture of drive and composure, and the LPO, recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall last season, is on its best form.’
Matthew Rye, Daily Telegraph, 3 December 2005

When I Woke is the jewel in this anthology of recent Turnage pieces, recorded live by the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s in-house label. Turnage drapes Dylan Thomas’s three poems in sounds of rapt simplicity, creating a new world in which the lilt and word-shapes of the verse can resonate: very tuneful, very tonal and, in Finley’s artless performance, very touching. The purely orchestral Evening Songs range form urban languor to Mahlerian dreamworld, while Scherzoid is a playful mélange of fast, foot-tapping rhythm and mechanistic timbre.’
Andrew Clark, Financial Times, 19 November 2005

‘All credit to the LPO for compiling a whole evening of Turnage ... his instantly recognisable voice is well served by the blunt immediacy of the sound and the obvious flair of the performances.’
David Gutman, Gramophone, November 2005

‘A must-have for Turnage fans’
The Independent on Sunday, October 2005
