Rachmaninoff: Over and Out

We began Rachmaninoff: Inside Out posing a question that Tolstoy put to Rachmaninoff in 1900: ‘Tell me, does anybody want this kind of music?’

Now that the series is over, we look back over some of the reviews and reactions to the festival and to Rachmaninoff's music, more than 100 years on from Tolstoy's provocative question ...

We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who joined us throughout the festival and to everyone who listened at home or joined in our Rachmaninoff-related discussions online. We hope you enjoyed the journey as much as we did.

What people have been saying ...

'Deep pain and sadness expressed through intense creative discipline aren’t qualities noted often enough in the music of Serge Rachmaninoff. Yet they’ve been consistently underlined, with rigour to match, in Vladimir Jurowski’s season-long 'Inside Out' festival with his London Philharmonic Orchestra playing at a consistent white heat ... Rachmaninoff as one of the 20th century's truly great and serious composers?  Unquestionably.' - The Arts Desk

'Watching @LPOrchestra bring true justice to Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, Piano Concerto 1 & Isle of the Dead = AMAZING#bucketlistTICK' - audience member

'I don't know much about classical music but I do know when I am listening to something amazing! Pavel Kolesnikov's debut with @LPOrchestra' - audience member

‘Jurowski and the LPO’s performance [of the Symphonic Dances] was just right; deliberate, massively decisive, yet bracingly light. Throughout they held all the different aspects of the piece – the nostalgia, the swirling, surreal waltzes, the self-mocking sarcasm – in an ideal balance.’ (4 stars) - The Telegraph

‘Almost everything that the audience takes away from  The Miserly Knight happens in the orchestra – the richness of the colours, the creation of a dark, inwoard-looking, obsessive world ...The playing that Jurowski drew from the LPO was both detailed and gloomily atmospheric.’ - Financial Times

'Very accessible, even to those of us not steeped in the classical genre. What's not to like about Rach?' - audience member

'Classical music concerts only attract the elderly? Nonsense. The age range at this @LPOrchestra gig is wide. Remarkable achievement.' - audience member

‘This was a deeply satisfying instalment to the LPO’s ‘Inside Out’ series, making one relish two masterpieces given such rewarding interpretations.’ (4 stars) - Bachtrack
