Vladimir Jurowski introduces Shostakovich's dramatic symphonic depiction of war - his Symphony No. 8 (September 2014)
We open our 2014-15 season at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall with a peformance of Shostakovich's powerful statement against the futility of war - his eighth symphony. For the LPO's Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski this is the most honest and terrifying document of any war, in which Shostakovich depicts the tragedy of war. He also introduces Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, which pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet will perform in the first half of the concert on 24 September 2014.
The new release on the LPO Label is an archive recording of Strauss's tone poems Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben, conducted by Bernard Haitink.
