John Adams's nativity oratorio El Niño
LPO Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski and countertenors Brian Cummings and Daniel Bubeck explore John Adams's retelling of the nativity story, El Niño (December 2013)
Throughout 2013, the London Philharmonic Orchestra appears as the major orchestral partner in Southbank Centre's year-long, multi-art-form festival The Rest Is Noise. The festival looks at the key works of the 20th century through a wide lens, taking in the political happenings, social movements, cultural climates and personal stories that gave rise to these inspiring and sometimes controversial pieces of music.
The festival closes on 14 December 2013 with a performance of John Adams's nativity oratorio, El Niño. Using a mix of biblical and Hispanic poetry sources, the well known story is retold from the perspective of women.
The LPO's Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski introduces the libretto and musical language of the work. Brian Cummings and Daniel Bubeck are two of the countertenors who were part of the original cast in 2000, and they share their experiences of performing John Adams's music.
