Back in June 2013 the Orchestra recorded five works by American composer Peter Boyer, including his First Symphony, at Abbey Road Studios. The CD is released today on the Naxos label in its American Classics series.
Peter Boyer is one of the most frequently performed American orchestral composers of his generation, widely admired in particular for his GRAMMY®-nominated Ellis Island: The Dream of America. Describing his music as 'uplifting', he cites influences including Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and John Williams. On working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, he said:
'This is the first opportunity that I've had to work with the LPO. It's a fabulous orchestra from top to bottom, and really astonishing how much music we're able to record in a single day and evening. Having heard this orchestra in The Lord of the Rings scores, I just thought to myself that if I could ever had the opportunity to make a recording then I would certainly want to do that. I've never actually driven a Maserati but it's very much what it must be like ... you have this incredible machine; this incredible responsiveness.'
