Throughout 2016, we are exploring the musical legacy of the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare in our Shakespeare400 festival. From Verdi's deeply tragic retelling of Othello, to Britten's mystical A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare’s work has inspired some of the greatest composers to adapt his plays for use on the operatic stage. We put together a short playlist of some of the best known arias and overtures in the operas that have been inspired by the words of the beloved bard.

Shakespeare’s famous story of a pair of star-cross’d lovers has sparked countless retellings on stage, on screen, and in the concert hall. Ahead of our performance of excerpts from Prokofiev’s musical version on Friday 15 April as part of our Shakespeare400 celebrations, we have had a look at some of the music in films and musicals that have been inspired by Shakespeare’s tragic romance, Romeo and Juliet.

Shakespeare400: Love in the orchestra

Love is a recurring theme in many of Shakespeare’s plays. Powerful, personal and very often messy, Shakespeare’s treatment of love reminds his audience of the real, raw emotions around falling in love and being in love.
