Meet the runners: Lyndon Meredith

Find out how training is going for LPO trombonist Lyndon Meredith, as he joins 'Team LPO' to take on the Vitality British 10K London run on Sunday 10 July, in aid of our BrightSparks schools concerts.

Why are you taking part in the 10K?

Lyndon (pictured front row, third from right): I'm taking part in the 10K to try to raise some money for our BrightSparks children’s concerts, but also on a purely personal level, it's not very often you get to run around London IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! (well, not safely and without getting shouted at, or run over ...)

Have you had any experience of working on any of the LPO’s education programmes?

Yes, I've done a few education projects since joining the Orchestra, ranging from our schools’ concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, composing pieces in small groups in schools, to working with children with special needs. It's very rewarding to see the excitement that live music can give, even if I do usually end up being laughed at for making silly noises ... (on the trombone).

How experienced a runner are you?

I've been running on and off for about 10 years now. As many people do, I started running as a way to counter the effects of not having looked after myself for a number of years, and now running is a big part of my life. I'm lucky to live near the North Downs, so most of my running is done in the countryside which gives the added benefits of fresh air, hills, great views and a bit of sunshine now and again. Also, getting chased by dogs is good interval training …

Do you find that running has any particular advantages for you?

Yes. Our job involves a lot of sitting down, be it on the concert stage, in rehearsals or sitting on trains, planes and buses when touring. I find that getting out for a run helps to counter that. We have a fantastic group of runners at the LPO which seems to be growing all the time, so whether we're in London, at Glyndebourne or on tour, if there's a bit of spare time we'll be out running.

Do you have any tips for people who are considering taking up running?

Start slowly. It takes months and years to properly adjust the body to running, and trying to rush the process usually leads to injury and inevitably time away from running. I did it myself, so I know how frustrating it can be to get sidelined with an injury just as you're starting to make progress. A good plan for first timers is something like the Couch to 5K schedule which may seem a long drawn out process but is very good for gradually building up strength and stamina that will serve for years of happy and hopefully injury-free running.
