Why are you taking part in the 10K?
I took up running a couple of years ago so am very keen to test myself against LPO's finest. Not that we're competitive or anything ... most importantly though, it is for a very worthwhile cause.
Have you had any experience of working on any of the LPO’s education programmes?
I haven't been in the Orchestra for very long, so have only taken part in the larger scale orchestral concerts for the education department so far. It is clearly a thriving part of the orchestra's schedule that I'm sure I will become more involved with in the future.
How experienced a runner are you?
I've been running since 2014 but have concentrated on marathon distance. This will be my first 10k road running event.
Do you find that running has any particular advantages for you as a musician?
I'm convinced a lower resting heart rate due to increased fitness levels helps keep a lid on any performance nerves. Between the rehearsal and concert on a concert day, it is a great way to focus or take your mind off any stressful solos that might be looming.
Do you have any tips for people who are considering taking up running?
Personally I like to give myself an ambitious target to work towards, as it is a great motivational tool. There is nothing like the excitement and nerves on the day of a big running event. It can be quite addictive. I also think it is good to mix things up. I do a lot of running round in boring loops sticking to pace plans when preparing for a big event, so it is nice to occasionally to take off without a time or route in mind and go just exploring. Some of my favourite runs have involved getting lost!
