Lady Mary Christie 1937–2020

The death was announced this week of Mary Christie, wife of Sir George Christie and daughter-in-law of Sir John Christie and Audrey Mildmay, founders of Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where the LPO has been Resident Symphony Orchestra since 1964.

Mary (née Nicholson) married George Christie in 1958 at the age of just 24 and devoted much of the rest of her life to the opera house, which her husband managed for over 40 years. Their son, Gus Christie, has been Executive Chairman of Glyndebourne since 2000.

Lady Mary will be remembered, in the words of her late husband, as ‘the heartbeat which is at the core of Glyndebourne’s existence’. In an announcement on the Glyndebourne website her son Gus recalled ‘her devotion to Glyndebourne, and in particular her love of the gardens, [which] has enriched the lives of so many of us.
‘She will be missed by her children, grandchildren and extended family and we will dedicate Festival 2021 to her memory.’
