Introducing: Sofia Gubaidulina's Offertorium

In her early days of composing, Sofia Gubaidulina was encouraged by Shostakovich to pursue her ‘mistaken path’ after being deemed ‘irresponsible’ by the Soviet state. Today she is one of the biggest names in contemporary classical composition. On Wednesday 6 November, we perform her violin concerto Offertorium, which is considered by many to be her greatest musical achievement.

New Video: Introducing Arvo Pärt's Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten

Arvo Pärt’s devastating purity, stillness and resonance seems to wipe the musical slate clean of all needless excess, noise and argument. In this short film we introduce Pärt’s Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten, which we perform on Wednesday 6 November as part of The Rest Is Noise, conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste.

New Video: Introducing Messiaen's Des canyons aux étoiles

In this short film we introduce Messiaen's 1974 work Des canyons aux étoiles (From the Canyons to the Stars) - an orchestral depiction of the vastness of space. Messiaen’s hallmarks are all here: intoxicating colours, vivid images of nature, and beguiling rhythms imported from Asian traditions. We perform this piece on Saturday 2 November, as part of Southbank Centre's The Rest Is Noise.

New Video: Introducing Shostakovich's Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar)

Written at the height of the ‘thaw’ that followed Stalin’s demise, Shostakovich found himself able to speak his mind once more and lashed out against antisemitism and totalitarian rule in this bold and heartfelt work, which we introduce in this bite-sized video. We perform this piece on Saturday 26 October at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall.

New Video: Introducing Prokofiev's Symphony No. 7

In this short video the London Philharmonic Orchestra's Education & Community Director Patrick Bailey introduces Prokofiev's Seventh and final Symphony, an evocative and nostalgia-tinged work written in 1952 and premiered just six-months before the composer's death. We perform this piece on Wednesday 23 October at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall.
