From his young student days when he studied with Alexander Scriabin and charmed Tchaikovsky, to finding himself in the émigré community of artists in America, Rachmaninoff seemed to be hugely popular wherever he went. Indeed, those who knew him said ‘Who did not know Rachmaninoff intimately, did not know him at all.’
