CD reviews – Vladimir Jurowski conducts Zemlinsky

July 2014's release on the LPO Label was a disc of Zemlinsky's A Florentine Tragedy and Six Maeterlinck Songs conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. The disc also features soloists Petra Lang (mezzo soprano), Heike Wessels (mezzo soprano), Sergei Skorokhodov (tenor) and Albert Dohmen (baritone). It's been receiving rave critical reviews so far. Here are the press reviews ...

'A blistering performance from the London Philharmonic under Vladimir Jurowski – decadent in all senses of the word, this one-act depiction of a love-triangle with a twist is powerful, intoxicating stuff and packs a real punch ... The performance is terrific – the LPO draw out all of the score’s terrible beauty, and Jurowski’s pacing really turns the dramatic screw.'
Presto News, 23 June 2014

'[Jurowski's] thoughtful yet intense conducting is matched by playing of exquisite if sinister detail from the London Philharmonic ... The recording is as sumptuously clear as one could wish.' (CD of the Week)
Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 9 July 2014

‘Zemlinsky colours, punctuates and informs the drama with orchestral material and Jurowski and the LPO certainly make this count. The orchestra is on terrific form, really bringing Zeminsky's rich sound world and Secessionist harmonies to life … This is a fascinating disc with a pair of highly dramatic and still neglected works. Whatever you think about the ultimate worth of Zemlinsky's music, these performances cry out to be listened to.’
Robert Hugill, Planet Hugill, 16 July 2014

‘Jurowski’s performance makes a thrilling appeal to the imagination, abetted by visceral contributions from the three soloists.’ (4 stars)
Andrew Clark, Financial Times, 19 July 2014

‘Jurowski demonstrates a masterly control of dramatic pace, ratcheting up the tension slowly but surely so that the final denouement reaches a devastating climax. The LPO proves superbly responsive to Jurowski’s demands.' (5 stars)
Erik Levi, BBC Music Magazine, September 2014 (not online)

‘Vladimir Jurowski and the LPO capture both its passion and its restraint well. It’s a reading of remarkable orchestral clarity and lucidity.’
Hugo Shirley, Gramophone, September 2014 (not online)

‘Jurowski brings fluidity and forward momentum to his conducting … The London Philharmonic plays wonderfully for him in the Royal Festival Hall performance.’
George Hall, Opera Magazine, October 2014 (not online)

'Jurowski conducts with a sure sense of cumulative momentum, drawing playing from the LPO that pointedly underlines the music's pivoting between Romanticism and modernity.'
Richard Whitehouse, International Record Review, October 2014 (not online)

The CD is priced £9.99 and is available from the LPO websiteAmazon or as a download from iTunes.
