The London Philharmonic Orchestra pays a visit to The Anvil with Thomas Zehetmair performing Beethoven's elegant Violin Concerto, and conducting Mahler's Symphony No. 4 with celebrated soprano Sofia Fomina.
Beethoven's Violin Concerto begins with five strokes of the timpani, and unfolds from this simple beginning into the greatest of all concertos for the instrument.
The Fourth is Mahler's most serene symphony, written at a time when everything in his life seemed to be going well. After three graceful and mostly good humoured movements, it concludes with a child's-eye view of heaven, as a place where food, games and music overflow in abundance.
