Composer relationships

It is also a chance for us to introduce our London audiences to a range of works by the composer – programming older compositions as well as commissions and premieres. It's a relationship that is highly valued by both the Orchestra and the composer.

Composer in Residence

Magnus Lindberg (2014–17)

Finnish conductor Magnus Lindberg became the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Composer in Residence at the beginning of its 2014/15 season. He also played an active role in the Orchestra’s education activities, mentoring the participants on the LPO Young Composers scheme and conducting the annual Debut Sounds concerts.

Highlights of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2014/15 season included the world premiere of Accused with soprano soloist Barbara Hannigan, and the UK premiere of his Second Piano Concerto given by Yefim Bronfman. The 2015/16 season included a performance of Lindberg’s Violin Concerto No. 1 by Christian Tetzlaff and the world premiere of his Second Violin Concerto performed by Frank Peter Zimmermann, as well as performances of Gran Duo and Corrente.

In July 2016 the Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski gave the world premiere of Lindberg’s Two Episodes at the BBC Proms, paired with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9: a programme reprised on 6 May 2017 at Royal Festival Hall.

Julian Anderson (2010–14)

The Residency began with a fanfare for the Royal Society's 350th Anniversary celebrations at Southbank Centre in June 2010, and continued with performances of The Stations of the Sun (December 2010), The Crazed Moon (March 2011), Fantasias (December 2011) and the premiere of the LPO commission The Discovery of Heaven (March 2012), which won a 2013 South Bank Sky Arts Award. In November 2013 the LPO released a recording of the award-winning performance, together with Anderson’s Fantasias and The Crazed Moon.

More recently, the LPO performed The Stations of the Sun on 7 December 2013, Alleluia with the London Philharmonic Choir on 1 March 2014, and the violin concerto In liebliche Bläue with soloist Carolin Widmann  on 14 March 2015.   These three works were released on the LPO Label in March 2016.

Our first CD of Anderson's orchestral music was released on the LPO Label in November 2013, including The Discovery of Heaven and Fantasias.

Julian Anderson’s work is published by Faber Music.

Premieres

Commissions and premieres

The London Philharmonic Orchestra is proud of its long history of commissioning new music from an illustrious list of composers. Commissions are often made in partnership with other orchestras or venues, to ensure that the new work receives multiple performances across the world.

We also bring newly written works to London that have been commissioned and premiered elsewhere in the world, but that have not been heard in the UK or London before.

Without new music, the orchestral repertoire stagnates. But commissioning also requires financial support. If you are interested in finding out more about our programme of commissions and how you could help, contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
