Rachel, Double Bass Player with the Hallé

At the age of 11 I participated in an LPO primary school workshop and met double bass player George Peniston. He performed Delibes’s Pizzicato Polka, getting some kids to help him play it. I fell in love with the sound and look of the instrument and was delighted to learn from George that smaller ones were available; I promptly asked my parents for one of my own! I began lessons at my local music centre in Bromley, but when my teacher left I learned with George, who lived locally.

My musical journey with the LPO started with that first encounter, continued through my tuition with George, and ultimately led to me playing with the Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, in America and the Canary Islands. At the Hallé Orchestra I deliver similar workshops, using the same Pizzicato Polka as George did. One day I hope someone will start their journey because of me. I wouldn’t have my career in music now without that LPO workshop.

Help us celebrate this 30th year of the LPO’s Education and Community Programme.
