I was lucky enough to start my LPO career with a summer at Glyndebourne; it was a lovely introduction to the Orchestra.
Performing opera repertoire is a wonderful aspect of the job and, as players, we’re very lucky to be able to do it. Playing in the pit and, importantly, on the concert platform, whilst very different experiences, are incredibly valuable for us. The players develop a real sense of camaraderie in the pit – how could we not when we’re that squashed in!? By contrast, being able to see and interact with singers when we do something like the Ring Cycle, The Rake’s Progress or Oedipe at the Royal Festival Hall makes for an incredibly exciting experience and brings opera to a wider audience.
