Concert reviews: 21 February 2018

On Wednesday 21 February 2018 we performed Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring alongside works by Debussy and Delius, and Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand with soloist Benedetto Lupo, conducted by Juanjo Mena. Read the reviews below:

★★★★★ ‘The LPO responded to Mena’s fancy footwork with an ideal mix of force and finesse in a fulfilling celebration of spring’ Geoff Brown, The Times, 22 February 2018

‘Musical clarity was Mena’s watchword, no cheap thrills here, and no short-changing of the music either ... The LPO was precise, dynamic and responsive throughout ... It was quite something to hear The Rite not treated glibly and used as a showpiece vehicle’ Colin Anderson,, 22 February 2018

★★★★☆ ‘A fine performance, full of bite, control and pinpoint accuracy’ Nick Boston,, 23 February 2018

‘Everything sounded completely fresh ... The playing seemed absolutely flawless. The balance was perfect, choice of tempi was absolutely spot on at every point, there was a heavy sense of menace in the quieter passages and the savagery of the score was brilliantly evoked’ Alan Sanders, seenandheard-international, 22 February 2018
