British composer Julian Anderson has been described by The Times as ‘a composer to cherish’ and by London’s Evening Standard as ‘one of the finest composers of his generation’. He has been the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Composer in Residence since 2010. This is the first album of his works performed by the Orchestra, and includes the Sky Arts Award-winning premiere performance of The Discovery of Heaven.
'This might just be the new music you've been waiting for, its wow-factor surface fluency only part of the story. Strongly recommended.'
David Gutman, Gramophone, January 2014

'Kaleidoscopic in terms of its colour, exhilarating in its energy and captivating in its lyricism. This excellent performance [of Fantasias] under Vladimir Jurowski, superbly recorded with optimum impact and clarity, is to be treasured.'
Colin Anderson, Classical Source, 27 October 2013
'It's the vivid recording of the third work here that makes the biggest impression ... Essentially a five-movement concerto for orchestra, full of spectacular effects, textural sleights of hand and lightning-fast changes of direction, [Fantasias] is Anderson's most vivid, most approachable orchestral work to date.' (4 stars)
Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 31 October 2013
'The Crazed Moon is infused with an extraordinary sense of wonder, almost subliminal trumpets giving way to the moan of cellos, before harp, chimes, woodwind and strings delve into turbulent territory.' (4 stars)
Andy Gill, The Independent, 1 November 2013
'A virtuoso of orchestral style'
Paul Driver, The Sunday Times, 17 November 2013
'There can be no stronger proof of Anderson's emergence as a figure of international stature than these three scores, brilliantly performed by the LPO ... The Crazed Moon and The Discovery of Heaven are among the most vivid soundscapes of the modern orchestral era.' (5 stars)
Andrew Clark, Financial Times, 22 November 2013
'This disc of orchestral works provides a superb overview of his fascinating talent, as well as being a testament to the London Philharmonic Orchestra's support for their resident composer. This is intelligent music, which both seduces by its sound and by the rationality of its construction. Highly recommendable indeed.'
Robert Hugill, Planet Hugill blog, 26 November 2013
The Sunday Times 100 Best Records of the Year, 8 December 2013
'Three cheers for the London Philharmonic Orchestra's commitment to new music, and many more for this marvellous disc devoted to Julian Anderson's orchestral works ... This is stunning music, played superbly and captured in good sound.' (5 stars)
Christopher Dingle, BBC Music Magazine, January 2014
'This might just be the new music you've been waiting for, its wow-factor surface fluency only part of the story. Strongly recommended.' (Gramophone Choice)
David Gutman, Gramophone, January 2013
'This sensationally well-played disc is as good an introduction as any to a body of work once bracing, stimulating, and fastidiously inventive.'
Matt Mendez, I Care If You Listen blog, 22 January 2014
'These are three complex and demanding score but they are delivered with great assurance and expertise by the LPO under Vladimir Jurowski and Ryan Wigglesworth. The LPO deserve praise not just for the conviction of their performances here but also for their enterprise in issuing on their own label not just this disc but also several previous ones of contemporary music.'
