Orchestrating Rachmaninoff songs

LPO Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski introduces the orchestrations of Rachmaninoff songs made by his grandfather. (April 2015)

In April we reach the end of the London Philharmonic Orchestra's Rachmaninoff: Inside Out season, during which we've been exploring the symphonies, piano concertos and choral works of Rachmaninoff.  Fittingly, we end with the composer's third and final symphony, and in the first half of the concert perform arrangements of Rachmaninoff's piano suites and songs by Yuri Butsko and the composer Vladimir Jurowski.  In this podcast, Vladimir Jurowski explores the reasons for making orchestrations, including the historical background that led to his grandfather's arrangements for orchestra of Rachmaninoff's songs.
