Lullaby for Hans Turnage: London Philharmonic Orchestra's
Composer in Residence
Lullaby for Hans is a short work for string orchestra, which Mark-Anthony Turnage wrote in 2005 in tribute to his former teacher and mentor, composer Hans Werner Henze.
Turnage says Lullaby 'is very reflective and reminds me of wonderful days spent in his company over the many years I have known him.' It contrasts solo and collective string writing into a gentle whole.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra gave the UK première of Lullaby for Hans in April 2007 at Snape Maltings in Suffolk, This was the culmination of a three day residency at Aldeburgh giving the strings of the Orchestra and newly appointed Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski the opportunity to work together on a variety of repertoire, including this work by Mark-Anthony Turnage.
