2009-10 was one of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s most ambitious and varied seasons at the Royal Festival Hall, offering favourites of the symphonic and concerto repertoire with a stunning lineup of conductors and soloists, and adventurous programmes to take you on a journey to discover something new.

Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski’s imagination, technical ability and artistic knowledge generate wonderful evenings of music with a real sense of occasion. This season he presides over Between Two Worlds, a celebration of the unique world of Alfred Schnittke, as well as bringing us a host of established masterworks, including Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony.

Osmo Vänskä curates a four-concert survey of symphonies and other works by his great Finnish compatriot Jean Sibelius. Marin Alsop conducts the music of her teacher Leonard Bernstein, and Kurt Masur marks Mendelssohn’s 200th anniversary year.

‘Firsts’ this season include a new symphony by Ravi Shankar, a new Percussion Concerto by Sibelius’s Finnish successor Einojuhani Rautavaara, a new orchestral work from our Composer in Residence Mark-Anthony Turnage, and the first European performance of Philip Glass's Violin Concerto 2 (The American Four Seasons).

Between Two Worlds: Alfred Schnittke
One of the most eclectic and exuberant voices of the late 20th century, Alfred Schnittke absorbed a millennium of music fragments from plainchant to pop, and brought together the scholarly and the trivial, the tonal and the dissonant. Vladimir Jurowski conducts three concerts and a day of discussion and music.
