We were saddened this month to hear of the death of Jesús López-Cobos, former Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1981 to 1986.
Following his time with the LPO he went on to spend 15 years as music director of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and ten with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. He was also in demand as an opera conductor, working frequently with Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.
His 1983 recording of Verdi’s Requiem with the LPO and London Philharmonic Choir is considered one of the definitive recordings of the work; Gramophone described his conducting on the recording as possessing ‘fire, grace and an enviably unselfconscious feel for the work's musical and spiritual dynamic’.
