The Leverhulme Young Composers programme offers four promising but as yet unpublished young composers the chance to develop, workshop and compose a new piece for a 30+ piece orchestra of London Philharmonic Orchestra players and Foyle Future Firsts for performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Julian Anderson, the LPO’s Composer in Residence, leads the Programme, offering the opportunity for composers to benefit from his expertise and guidance. The Programme is also linked to the Orchestra’s ongoing commitment to new music through the promotion of the Debut Sounds concert, the culmination of the year’s work.
Debut Sounds: Currents of Space (12 June 2012) >

The three workshops take place throughout the year and offer a constructive and inquisitive environment for the composers to explore their ideas as well as offering them extraordinary access to Julian Anderson, members of the LPO and a professional conductor. While other similar programmes offer performance platforms or one-off rehearsal sessions, the provision of workshops over time is an investment in talent, giving young composers the opportunity to develop their work in response to feedback received. The LPO is also keen to ensure that the programme catches later developers (hence the age limit of 35 or under and the restriction to those who have not yet had work professionally published).
Alumni of the scheme include Steven Daverson (Siemens Music Foundation Prizewinner 2011) and Mica Levi (singer/songwriter, Micachu and the Shapes).
