Creative Classrooms Connect
Welcome to Creative Classrooms Connect, a space for Key Stage 2 teachers to access, share and respond to music-making resources created by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, primary teachers and other experts in music education. We’ll be regularly uploading ideas for classroom music activities, with which we invite teachers to interact.
This is a vocal composition project based on the music and stories of Scheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. We have outlined the background of the piece and the composer, followed by how to create your own version of Scheherazade with your children. This project is designed to be flexible, so you can make it as simple or as challenging as you like. This being the case, it could take as few as two sessions or be extended much longer.
Please feel free to adapt the ideas below to suit the resources you have and the needs of your children.
This resource is designed to help you and your class use Gustav Holst’s The Planets suite in the classroom. We have found that by working in a creative, hands-on way children can begin to understand and enjoy the repertoire the London Philharmonic Orchestra performs and this in turn can enliven your music lessons. We’ve outlined the background to the piece and how to listen it. We've also included a creative project that shows you how to create your own version of the most famous section – Mars.
In this festive lesson, we use the cumulative structure of the popular song The Twelve Days of Christmas to create a class performance on percussion instruments, with some ideas for taking it further.
